SKRL Die Casting operates 12 furnaces of varying capacities for melting and holding aluminum. Given 90% of SKRL’s natural gas is consumed by furnace heating, it is imperative they operate at an optimal efficiency. Analysis of the furnaces was completed to uncover potential avenues for energy reduction. First, a schedule and instructions for proper cleaning and tuning of the furnaces was implemented that requires oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide measurements of the flue gas at various locations throughout the stack. Secondly, a highly efficient combustion train was designed with components from Fives North American to ensure that each furnace was constructed for its expected workload. Further work consisted of improving the entire process by which billets are turned into casted parts and developing techniques to reduce the workload of the metal tenders.
